Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. launched the National Arts and Letters Commission on September 24, 1973, under the presidency of 15th National President Lillian Pierce Benbow. Dr. Jeanne L. Noble, 12th National President (1958-63) and university professor, was named chair of the commission and co-chaired by notable Deltas Leontyne Price and Lena Horne. The National Commission of Arts and Letters seeks to boldly advance the Black experience, highlighting the artistic contributions of African American people of the past and present and elevating them to public attention with particular emphasis on the positive roles of Black women.
Since 1973, the Tempe Alumnae Chapter has amplified arts and culture in our community by hosting events such as the Peppermint Cabaret and the Ebony Art show. Aligned with the National Arts and Letters Commission, the Tempe Alumnae Chapter continues to honor the artistic expressions made by Black people to American society.
The Tempe Alumnae Chapter is home to several artists including authors, poets, musicians, singers, photographers, spoken word artists, and voice over talent.
